EU

The European Union (EU) is an international organization comprising 27 European countries
and governing their common economic, social, and security policies. Originally confined to
western Europe, the EU undertook a robust expansion into central and eastern Europe in the
early 21st century.
The EU’s members are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia,
Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. The United Kingdom, which had been a founding member of
the EU, left the organization in 2020.
The common principles and values that underlie life in the EU are freedom, democracy,
equality and the rule of law, promoting peace and stability.

In the first half of 2022, the Russian Federation launched an invasion into its neighbouring nation, Ukraine on the context of “freeing the nation from Nazi-like rule”. Many believe the true reason behind the invasion was the rumours of Ukraine joining NATO, a military alliance with western nations including countries like USA. The war in Ukraine caused horrifying damage for the everyday citizens of Ukraine and many cities and towns were left
devastated. The EU and NATO nations have sanctioned Russia and have been backing Ukraine in a way to avoid direct conflict with Russia itself.
On the other hand, many European nations like Germany depend on Russia for resources like gas. Such a situation has caused a dilemma for them. EU nations want to cut their ties with an aggressor like Russia but aren’t able to do so without harming the normal lives of their own citizens. The invasion has also overwhelmed the EU nations with refugees coming from Ukraine in search for peace and have worsened the refugee situation of Europe.
Hence, in such stressful economic, political, humanitarian and military situation; the EU nations must come together to decide upon the future of the continent and the world as a whole and solve the problems that have been caused because of the invasion.
